How to Make Honey Remedies to Help You Fall Asleep Naturally

Using honey remedies is a traditional way to induce sleep since forever!

According to ancient Chinese healers, eating honey every night can help you fall asleep naturally while European fold healers suggest drinking a cup of warm milk with a teaspoon of honey before going to bed.

This old-fashioned sleep remedy is prepared by mixing 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons of honey in a glass of warm water.

According to the traditional Mexican healers, you should mix 1 teaspoon of raw honey in a cup of warm te de manzanilla, or chamomile tea.

Also, you can add a teaspoon of honey in a cup of hot water, a teaspoon of honey in a cup of passionflower tea, or just add honey on a peanut butter sandwich before going to sleep.

According to Mike McInnis, Scottish researcher, pharmacist, and author, honey remedies have the ability to improve and lengthen restorative sleep by at least 3 mechanisms. Taking honey before going to sleep means that honey:

  • Stabilizes blood sugar levels
  • Ensures proper liver glycogen stores for 8 hours of sleep
  • Contributes to the release of melatonin, the hormone needed for the recovery and rebuilding of body tissues during sleeping

The mechanism for this process can be described by what McInnes calls the honey-insulin-melatonin cycle or HYMN cycle. This cycle begins with the ingestion of one to two tablespoons of honey in the hour prior to bedtime, as follows:

— The glucose moiety of honey produces a mild glucose spike, passing from the gut, through the liver circulation and into the general circulation.

— The mild elevation in blood sugar assists a controlled release of insulin

— With insulin being present, tryptophan is driven into the brain.

— Our body converts tryptophan serotonin, a hormone responsible for promoting relaxation.

— Serotonin is converted to melatonin in the pineal gland.

— Melatonin reduces body temperature and other mechanisms, thus activating sleep. Also, it inhibits the release of more insulin from the pancreas which in turn prevents a rapid drop in the blood sugar level.

— Melatonin has the ability to promote the release of growth hormone, hormone responsible for all the recovery physiology. This is the first step in the recovery process that happens during the night.

— These recovery hormones can repair, maintain, and rebuild the bone, muscle, and other body tissues.

— Melatonin can influence the memory consolidation for the formation of neural cell adhesion molecules during REM sleep. Our body needs these molecules for the processing of short-term memory into long-term memory in the brain cortex.

— Our liver takes up fructose and converts it to glucose, and then to liver glycogen. This supply the brain with the needed supply of glucose for the night.

— In addition, fructose prompts the release of glucokinase from the hepatocyte nuclei, thus regulating glucose uptake into the liver. In this way, fructose ensures proper liver glycogen supply during the night and prevents a huge glucose/insulin spike.

— A proper liver glycogen supply shows that stress hormones need not be released.

Isn’t it exciting that honey remedies are safe, cheap, and effective way that will help you to fall asleep naturally?
